Bars & Restaurants

We love spontaneously going to one of the many bars or cafés on a trip and often having great experiences. Nevertheless, there are some bars and cafés that we visit frequently because we really like them. Below is a non-exhaustive list of our favourites (in order of distance from Casa Allegra).

Restaurants we’ve tested. To open the document use the WLAN password of Casa Allegra.

Poncha do Emanuel

Arco da Calheta – Distance: 200 Meter
An authentic bar where locals and tourists come together. As the name suggests, Emanuel serves various types of Poncha, the national drink of Madeira. There is a rustically furnished indoor area, as well as tables in front of the bar and on the small terrace. A great place to have a nightcap in the evening.

Closed on Mondays

Bentornato / The Rum Inn

Calheta – Distance: 7 Kilometer
A very nice little bar with a beautiful outdoor area, less than 200 metres from Calheta beach. The super friendly couple who manage the bar serve beside the usual drinks also cocktails of their own design and very good food, ideal for a quick snack. A great place to really enjoy the tranquillity and life in Madeira. For us, a visit to this bar is a must on any visit to Madeira!

Closed on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

Pukiki

Estreito da Calheta – Distance: 8 Kilometer
Here you will find a very large selection of super tasty cocktails, all mixed from fresh ingredients. You immediately get that Hawaiian feeling. Each cocktail is served in a special vessel, which is an experience in itself. With or without alcohol, everyone will find something tasty here. Quite rightly, no Poncha or coffee is served here.

Closed on Sundays and Mondays

Joe’s Bar

Jardim do Mar – Distance: 12 Kilometer
Cosy bar with a beautiful backyard. A good place to have a drink or something to eat from the small menu. For example, the typical schnitzel sandwich, the Prego. A nice, quiet place with good drinks and good food.

Closed on Sundays

Bar da Pedra

Paul do Mar – Distance: 15 Kilometer
From our point of view, this is not only the place with the best Nikita, but also the best pub on the island. Great music with good drinks right by the sea. You can sit at the tables or directly on the wall at the beach and enjoy the unique atmosphere.

Closed on Tuesdays

Taberna da Poncha

Serra de Água – Distance: 19 Kilometer
Not just one of the Poncha bars on the island, this is the Poncha bar par excellence. Tourists and locals meet here to enjoy what is probably the best Poncha on the island. And if you’re wondering why there are so many peanut shells on the floor, yes, the shells should be thrown to the floor. We almost have withdrawal symptoms if we haven’t been here for more than three days.
